Volcano Bay

Overview of Universal’s Volcano Bay

View looking up at beach parasols

Universal’s Volcano Bay is a vibrant water theme park located at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. The park is designed to resemble a lush South Pacific island retreat, offering visitors an immersive tropical experience. Its iconic centrepiece, the Krakatau Volcano, stands at the heart of the park and contains several of Volcano Bay’s signature attractions.

The Story of the Waturi People

Volcano Bay is inspired by the narrative of the Waturi people, a fictional Polynesian-influenced culture. This storytelling element is woven throughout the park, adding a unique cultural flavour to the overall experience.

Themed Villages

Encircling Krakatau are three distinct themed villages, each contributing to the park’s atmosphere:

These villages feature lush tropical vegetation, cascading waterfalls, striking rock structures, and an unmistakable island vibe. The design aims to transport guests to a tranquil beach setting while also providing a sense of adventure and excitement.

Park Hours

During the summer peak season, Volcano Bay welcomes guests from 09:00 to 21:00, providing ample time to enjoy the park’s wide array of attractions and amenities. As temperatures drop and days grow shorter in the winter months, operational hours are adjusted accordingly, with the park typically open from 10:00 to 17:00.

Visitors should note that if the weather becomes particularly cold, there is a possibility that the park may close for the day. It is always recommended to check current operating hours before planning your visit to ensure the park will be open and to avoid disappointment.

Check the park calendar for updates.

Note: Universal Volcano Bay will close for the season beginning October 26, 2026, with a planned reopening on or before March 24, 2027.

Tickets and Express Passes

Visitors to Volcano Bay can choose between a one-day ticket that grants access solely to Volcano Bay, or a multi-day ticket that includes entry to both Volcano Bay and the other Universal Orlando Resort theme parks.

The standard price for a one-day ticket is $80 for adults and $75 for children aged 3 to 9. On peak or special days, ticket prices increase to $85.

Express Passes are also available at Volcano Bay, allowing guests to reduce their wait times for attractions. The pricing for Universal Express Passes varies according to the season and crowd levels, starting from $19.99 and rising up to $79.99 on the busiest days.

It is advisable to check for online deals before your visit, as purchasing tickets in advance via the internet can be more cost-effective than buying them at the park gates.

General Information

Early Park Admission

Guests seeking to make the most of their visit may take advantage of Early Park Admission for select attractions at Volcano Bay. If you’re staying at an on-site hotel, you can enter from either 30 minutes to an hour early, depending on the time of year.

For the latest details on available experiences, please consult the official Universal Orlando Resort website.

Dress Code

While there is no formal dress code, suitable swimwear is mandatory. Younger children who wear nappies are required to use plastic pants or swim nappies in all pool areas. For safety and comfort, the use of water shoes is strongly recommended, as park surfaces may become extremely hot; these may also be worn on numerous attractions.

Wheelchair Rental

Wheelchairs are available for rental in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis. The wheelchair rental center is situated on the third floor of the Parking and Transportation Center.

Life Jackets

For certain attractions at Volcano the use of life jackets is compulsory.

Complimentary life jackets are conveniently provided throughout the park and are available in a broad selection of sizes, ranging from infant to adult.

Parents and carers of young children, particularly those under 30lbs or below 3 years of age, are encouraged to consider bringing their own life jackets. This is because the life jackets supplied by the park are generally intended for children who exceed this weight or age threshold.

Towel and locker rental

Lockers are available at the front of the park, Wave Village, River Village, and Rainforest Village (additional fees may apply). Prices start around $15 (large size) – $20 (family size). There are also specific ride lockers free for short-term usage.

Towels are available to rent for about $6 each, or you can bring your own.

Volcano Bay Seating

Lounge chairs and seating are complimentary that guests can use on a first-come, first-served basis. However, these are in high demand and can all be taken in the early morning.

For a guaranteed and more comfortable spot, the park offers paid upgrades:

Cost – starts around $299.99, but depending on demand, can reach $599.99+ per day.

  • To reserve a cabana or premium seating, you typically need to book in advance by calling 1-877-801-9720.

Do you need a full day at Volcano Bay?

Whether you need a full day at Volcano Bay depends on your goals, group, and the time of year. For most guests, especially first-time visitors, a full day is highly recommended to fully enjoy the park without rushing.

Crowds at Volcano Bay

This is the main factor. Virtual line queues tend to get much longer during busy times such as summer, holidays, and weekends, so allocating an entire day can be necessary. However, if you visit on a weekday during the off-season, you may be able to enjoy a shorter trip.

Location and Accessibility

Volcano Bay forms part of Universal Orlando Resort, conveniently located within the Orlando area. Its proximity to Cabana Bay Beach Resort allows guests staying at the resort to reach Volcano Bay easily, thanks to a dedicated pedestrian walkway connecting the two.

Rides and Attractions

Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides

The Kala and Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides are a pair of twin drop-slides situated within the imposing Krakatau Volcano. Renowned for their exhilarating nature, these slides stand out as two of the most thrilling attractions in the park, featuring intense launch capsules, impressive height, and intricately intertwined slide paths.

Ride Experience

Riders begin their journey inside a transparent, upright launch capsule. After a brief countdown, the floor suddenly drops away, propelling guests down the clear tubes into a splash zone125-feet below. During the decent, the tubes twist around each other multiple times, providing glimpses of the other rider speeding through the parallel slide.

Slide Comparison

  • Tai Nui (Green Slide): Widely regarded as the more intense option of the two, Tai Nui is frequently described as the most exhilarating experience in the entire park.
  • Kala (Blue Slide): Although still highly thrilling, Kala is generally considered slightly gentler compared to the Tai Nui slide.

Although similar, beginning with a combination of dark, enclosed tube segments and bright open-twisting flume sections, Ohno’s serpentine path is designed to feel slightly more aggressive, with sharper turns and faster pacing. Ending with rider being launched approximately 6 feet into the pool at the bottom.

Strong swimming ability is recommended due to the deep pool.

Riders spin through two large bowl-shaped areas, encountering gentle drops and swift currents that keep the adventure lively. The ride is set amid tropical-themed rockwork, bursts of water like geysers, and twisting turns that create a jungle-inspired atmosphere.

This attraction is ideal for families or groups who want to enjoy a fun, splash-filled outing together.

Puihi

This ride also accommodates 6 people but feels more intense and wilder than it’s tamer neighbour. It features dark tunnel sections and gravity defying airtime mounds hills that elevate the raft along the walls, providing riders with brief moments of weightlessness.

The thematic elements evoke the excitement of navigating river rapids through volcanic gorges, complemented by immersive sound effects and dynamic lighting within the tunnels to enhance the overall atmosphere.

There are plenty of free lounge chairs lined up along the beach, and shaded spots or umbrellas are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For extra comfort, cabanas can also be rented nearby.

A tranquil environment offers a peaceful respite, ideally suited for relaxation between activities. Guests can appreciate soothing island music, gentle breezes, and the calming sounds of waves emanating from the pool area.

Taniwha Tubes

Tonga and Raki collectively comprise the Taniwha Tubes, a major slide attraction featuring four distinct tube slides: two situated within Tonga (the green ride) and two within Raki (the blue ride).

Ride Experience

Guests may choose between single or double inner tubes for their experience. Additionally, tiki statues positioned throughout the course intermittently spray water jets at riders, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the attraction. Each of these rides provides family-friendly excitement within a meticulously themed setting.

Slide Comparison

  • Tonga (Green) – This slide features several open-air segments along a gently winding course at a reduced speed.
  • Raki (Blue) – Experience a predominantly enclosed slide that offers increased speed and numerous twists throughout the ride.

You can choose between two slide styles depending on how adventurous you feel—Tonga offers a lighter, more laid-back experience, while Raki is perfect if you’re looking for extra speed, enclosed twists, and the excitement of a traditional water slide.

The Krakatau Aqua Coaster is the signature attraction of Universal Volcano Bay, blending elements of a water slide and a roller coaster for an experience that is unique among water parks.

Built into and through the park’s giant volcano the ride passes through dark tunnels, sharp bends and water passages concluding with a plunge through a waterfall in a dramatic finale.

Because of the combination of waterslide and coaster elements, it feels more like a “water coaster ride” than a simple slide, with ups, downs, speed, drops and the immersive atmosphere of the volcano interior.

Be aware, as this is considered to be the headline attraction of Volcano Bay, many consider it a “must-do.” It generally draws high demand, and waits can be long on busy days.

For all you thrill seekers, Ko’okiri Body Plunge is one of the most intense attractions at Universal’s Volcano Bay. It is a trap-door body slide located at the top of the park’s Krakatau volcano, offering a pure adrenaline rush for the bravest guests.

The experience commences following a climb of more than 200 steps to access the launch area situated at the summit of the volcano. Upon entering the capsule, participants prepare for the activation of a trapdoor beneath them. This results in an almost vertical descent, creating a sensation akin to free fall for approximately 125 feet before entering the pool below.

After several intense slides or a long hot day, The Reef is a great place to relax, cool off, rest, or just watch the world go by. Although, because of its calm vibe, it may get busy as a “rest spot,” especially later in the day when people take breaks from slides.

Being the only wave-pool in the park, offering a large “lagoon-style” pool that cycles through natural-feeling waves, mimicking a beach/ocean experience.

The water depth in Waturi Beach ranges from shallow near the sandy shore to deeper zones farther out — up to around 6 feet at the deepest. Waves are triggered periodically, with a “bell or fanfare” signalling the start of a wave cycle.
